Where we need to be

Everyone needs to have access to sufficient amounts of nutritious food. Not only will this increase the quality of life of a billion people around the world, but meeting the basic needs of all people will allow everyone to begin thinking more long term about their environmental impacts.

In the future, we need to be able to have enough nutrient-rich soil and clean water to grow enough food to support all those on this planet. We also need to have enough diverse plants that can grow reliably in all different climates around the world. In addition, we need to have enough variety in the crop species we plant to deal with extreme weather events, pests, and disease without causing massive crop shortages. This is especially important going forward as we see changing climates, more extreme weather, and new pests as a result of Climate Change. Along similar lines, we will need to have enough education infrastructure in place to teach people how to grow this wide variety of plants and to teach them how to sustainably put together a portfolio of plants to grow.

Finally, there will need to be enough in the way of Microfinance to ensure that all people of the world have access to money to buy food or to invest in better equipment to grow food more efficiently and less expensively.
