How we get there

How we get to having better batteries is a good question. The short answer is likely to be research and production by battery manufacturers. So then, you may ask yourself, "What can I do about that? I don't own a big battery producing company." The biggest thing we as individuals can do to help along better batteries is to indicate to the manufacturers that there is a demand for them. We need to make it clear that we want plug-in hybrids and full on electric vehicles and will continue to want them for the foreseeable future. This will push the companies that produce these batteries to invest in better ways of making superior products.

Another thing that needs to happen is you need to buy smart and demand high quality batteries. Let the manufacturers know that you want cheaper batteries with better ranges, longer lifetimes, and less toxic materials. It will also be helpful to demand that information on battery technologies are shared around the world. This will allow developing countries can leapfrog technologies and go to the best fit for electric vehicles rather than starting with the least expensive, but probably most rudimentary technologies.
