This is an extension of the high mpg car guide. These vehicles can run solely on electricity and so can be very clean alternatives that still let you get around the way you do now. You still need to drive well and drive less when possible, but having a vehicle of this sort greatly minimizes your transportation impact. We've grouped not having a car in here because it likely has similarly low transportation emissions.
Steps:
1
Have or consider buying a plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle (or have no car)
If you have a plug-in hybrid or electric car already, great, show it off to your friends, tell them all about how it works, and move on to step 4. If you don't own a car, go ahead on to step 2.
If you are considering buying a plug-in hybrid (PHEV) or electric vehicle(EV), this is your place to commit to making one of these your next car. Congratulations, on to the next step: finding one.
2
Look at the options available
This means different things for people with no car and those looking for a plug-in or electric car. For those with no car, this means taking a look at how you get around. Do you rely on your friend with an SUV? Do you use public transit that runs inefficient buses on petroleum diesel? Be honest with how you get around and what it's impact is.
If you are in the market for a new plug-in hybrid or electric vehicle. There unfortunately aren't many out there right now. Take a look and see what you can find, but also keep an eye on our Transportation news sections and the
Where We Are page of the Electric Cars section, where we will mention mainstream PHEVs and EVs that hit the market.
3
Look for rebates
If you are looking for a PHEV or EV, take a look at local and national incentives for buying these high efficiency vehicles. If you don't own a car, take a look for public transit subsidies that may exist in your municipality.
4
Get around using minimal fossil fuels
Regardless of whether it's via biking, walking, public transit, or your new vehicle, the point of this guide is to get around using very few fossil fuels. This means driving your plug-in hybrid electric-only and recharging as much as possible. It also means getting charging stations in your community and all over the world. If you don't own a car, it means using public transportation reliant on electricity or waste grease biodiesel, or bumming rides off people with high efficiency vehicles.
