We put a lot of resources and energy into producing materials, and there are very few things that are so worthless when you are done with them that you should just bury them in a landfill. It's much better to first reuse, then recycle all the materials you can.
Steps:
1
Find out what your municipality's rules regarding recycling are
Look online or contact your municipality or waste collection agency to find out what can and can not be recycled. If you have things like electronics that can't be recycled at the curb, check out resources like
Earth 911 to learn where to recycle more obscure items.
2
Learn what the different numbers on plastics mean
There is a nice guide on this
here.
3
Make sure everyone in your household knows what can and can not be recycled
Now that you've done some research, share what you've learned with everyone you live with. Make sure everyone knows what can and can not be recycled and convince them to recycle everything that can be.
4
Post signage as necessary
In the SixLinks household, we've labeled all of our garbage cans as "Landfill Spouts" to remind ourselves to consider whether or not something can be recycled.
5
Recycle everything you can, every week
Once you're sure your household is recycling everything it can be, you're done!
