A real-time energy monitor is a device that you can put in your home that will tell you how much energy you are using in real time. This will let you see what energy you are consuming, how much it is costing you, and what you can do to keep those numbers nice and low.
Steps:
1
Shop around for a monitor
There are a lot of producers of these out there. A quick Google search will lead you to a number of them. Read reviews and look at how they work, how they are installed, and what they display (do they show both energy usage and money? Are they both real-time and cumulative?)
2
Purchase one
And install it. Most of these should be pretty easy to put in, just be sure to follow the instructions that come with the monitor.
3
Get some good use out of it
Move around your house turning things on and off to see what their draw is. Put the monitor in a high traffic area of the house where you can keep an eye on it and try to keep your energy usage low.
